Chris’ story is one of resilience, growth, and determination. Growing up, Chris had a challenging home life, often looking after his younger siblings while navigating a difficult relationship with his mother. The tension at home and conflicts with his mother’s partners left Chris feeling unhappy and disconnected. Eventually, he entered foster care, and by the age of 16, he was living in a hostel before moving into a group home with other young people facing similar struggles.

During this period, Chris found himself caught up with the wrong crowd. Experimenting with drugs and making risky choices led to what he describes as a “crazy” time in his life. But change was on the horizon. At 18, Chris moved into Southend YMCA, marking a fresh start—though not without its difficulties. The newfound freedom meant late nights, parties, and struggling with the highs and lows of depression.

Over time, Chris realised he wanted more for his future. He sought support in finding employment and secured a job at a pub. Unfortunately, the pub faced financial difficulties, and Chris was let go after a couple of months. This setback could have sent him spiralling, but instead, it became a turning point. Rather than retreating into isolation, spending days watching Netflix and playing video games, Chris started thinking ahead. Even video games, once an escape, lost their appeal. He set himself a goal: by 21, he wanted to move out of the YMCA into his own independent accommodation. To achieve that, he needed stable employment.

In the autumn of 2024, an opportunity arose—Chris took part in a three-day work taster at Waitrose. Embracing the challenge, he thrived in the team environment and found satisfaction in the work. His efforts paid off, leading to a job interview, which resulted in a part-time position.

Several months into his role, Chris feels the exhaustion of a hard day’s work, but he also experiences a deep sense of accomplishment. Then, in December, he reached his biggest milestone—moving into his own flat. Embracing independence, he’s adjusting to paying bills and managing responsibilities, but he was prepared for the challenge and is handling it well. Most importantly, he’s happy.

Looking ahead, Chris plans to increase his work hours and build more stability in his life. One small but meaningful dream has also come true—he finally got a pet cat, something he’s always wanted.

Chris’ journey is a testament to perseverance and the power of change. From difficult beginnings to creating a stable and independent life, his story serves as an inspiration for others facing similar struggles. The road wasn’t easy, but with determination and support, he has built a future filled with hope and possibility.
