Black History Month & Quiz

Southend YMCA & FYV are marked Black History Month 2020 by hosting a family quiz!

Our quiz was aimed to challenge how much people really know about black history and raise awareness of the many important contributions to society by the black community.

The quiz was presented by Ashley J, MTV presenter, Live Nation event presenter, Actor and the voice of ‘Jared’ in CBeebies series, JoJo & Gran-Gran. He was joined by Tee-J, who is known for his role in CBBC television show Kerching! He’s recently taken part in MTV, Channel 4 and E4’s Dubplate Drama.

The winner, Susan D, won a Caribbean feast for her family from Dub Kitchen in Southend.

Do you know who built the first functional wooden clock in America in 1752? Do you know what Sarah Boone is know for? Or who said “My humanity is bound up in yours, for we can only be human together”?

You can still watch the quiz and test your knowledge via our Facebook page or YouTube Channel.

We also shared facts, quotes and pictures throughout the month on our social media channels to test people's knowledge, to educate and to raise awareness.

FYV, funded by the National Lottery Community Fund, aims to help young people make a real difference in their community about issues they are passionate about. The marking of Black History Month is part of the Equality & Justice part of the FYV curriculum. Listen to our Youth Commissioners explain what Black History Month means to them in these 4 short videos..
