Southend YMCA creates emergency & first steps housing for young people

Did you know that DSC 0939Southend-on-Sea is one of the most densely populated areas in the United Kingdom? This means that there is a lack of available land on which to build social and affordable housing.

John Levy Housing Manager for Southend YMCA said "there is simply not enough housing for vulnerable young people in Southend. With a secure base and the support of our housing team young people are able to move towards independence. They learn how to maintain and sustain a tenancy, budget to pay those all important bills and work towards achieving the qualifications, skills and behaviours that are necessary for the work place."

Over the last year with the kind and generous donations of local people and grant making trusts Southend YMCA has been able to create two new move on properties. We have converted office space to residential accommodation and refurbished a neglected and uninhabitable property. This has provided a home for 8 young people furthering their journey to independence. We will also be opening a new unit with emergency accommodation in May averting young people from street homelessness.
