A local homeless charity has arranged a yearly donation of £1000 to Southend YMCA in memory of a long-standing member of their committee.
Serving the Homeless, based in Leigh-on-Sea, sadly lost Martin Ling during the Christmas period in 2013. Mr Ling, who passed away at the age of 76, was an integral member of the charity and for many years had helped the organisation raise thousands of pounds for homelessness projects in Southend and the surrounding boroughs.
Serving the Homeless is an ecumenical movement consisting on seven churches which organise fundraising events, collect food and materials to be used at day and night shelters and helps raise awareness of homelessness within our community.
In memory of Mr Ling, Serving the Homeless has committed to donating £1000 every December to Southend YMCA of which we are eternally grateful. The charity also has a long-standing relationship with Southend YMCA, sponsoring a category at our Youth Awards in November last year as well as a generous donation of £5,000 following our youth homelessness fundraiser, Sleep Easy, back in March 2013.
To thank them we will be naming one of our supported housing units after Mr Ling with a commemorative plaque which will be presented in the coming weeks.
